Kitchen Remodeling: What to Expect

Whatever your reason might be for deciding to remodel your kitchen; whether it’s a need for more space, wanting to open up your floor plan, or you are just tired of an old outdated look, this can be very exciting time! You will have the ability to choose the products and designs that go into the finished project; and at the end it will be something that reflects you and your lifestyle.

Choosing a Contractor

Before you begin your remodeling project you will need to choose a contractor. You should be able to ask for examples of previous work completed; but ideally they will already have a portfolio of work available for you to view on their website. Another great thing to look for are reviews of the contractor; are they mostly positive? Reviews with photos are great for having an idea of what to expect! After you decide you like a contractor’s work it’s time to talk budget. Ask about financing options and be sure the contactor you choose is in your price range. You don’t want to get in over your head on a project! Overall communication is key. Consider how easy it is to contact the contractor you choose and the method you communicate. Do they promptly answer or return calls? Have they clearly communicated and prepared you for what to expect during construction? A good contractor will be professional and easy to communicate with.

Materials

Choosing the right materials is a critical step. You want something that’s durable and made to last as well as something that fits your budget and lifestyle. Make sure you take your time and weigh your options. You don’t want to be stuck with something you end up not liking in the future. Carefully go over the layout if you intend to make changes. Really imagine yourself eating, cooking, and entertaining in this kitchen. Flooring, cabinets, cabinet hardware, and countertops will all come in various materials and styles that range in price. The goal is to find something in your budget that you will be satisfied with for years to come. Once you’ve made your selections it’s time to begin!

Trust the Process

Remember: Don’t hesitate to ask questions along the way. There are a few things to be aware of before beginning your project. Although this is an exciting time, be prepared for delays and setbacks. Some materials may take longer than others or could be on back order. Also be prepared for dust! Be aware there may be some dust and debris. Barriers will be placed to help contain the dust in the work area and by the end of your project all dust, dirt, and debris will be properly disposed of. The most important part of your kitchen remodel is to ensure you’ve taken the time to choose the right contractor that you feel can meet your needs. Open communication is important. You should feel secure in communicating your wants and that any questions you have are being answered. At the end of your project you should be completely satisfied and ready to break in your new kitchen.
